Friday, June 26, 1959, 17:33 hours: while a violent storm raged, a four-engine Lockheed Super Constellation L-1649A Starliner (the registration number N7313C, msn 1015, the name assigned Star of the Severn) of US airline Trans World Airlines (TWA) took off at 17.20, with fifteen minutes late, from Milan-Malpensa (he made a stopover with twenty passengers on board, imbarcandone forty others) and directed, as required by the flight path 891, first to Paris-Orly (with arrival at 19 hours, landing twenty-eight passengers, departure at 20) and then to Chicago-O’Hare (arriving at 6:40 am the following day), after reporting at 17:32 to the position beacon of Saronno, in the sky above the village was struck by lightning, he exploded, caught fire, disintegrated into several parts that fell in a radius of hundreds of meters, under the gaze of the amazed people called by sinister noises and strong flashes.
The TWA Flight 891 was started in Athens at 10.15 with Lockheed Super Constellation L-1649A number N8083H with six passengers on board. After landing in Rome-Ciampino at 12.15, the aircraft was replaced by the number N7313C, and there was the change of the crew as scheduled. In Rome they embarked fifteen other people.
On the ground, the remains of the aircraft were found very far from each other: the rudders on the boundary wall of a textile factory, the four engines of Marnate and Castellanza, fuselage and cart inOlgiate Olona in the wooded area of Via for Marnate, meters by Agnese farm, the right wing to over five hundred meters away from the fuselage in a cornfield in the territory of Marnate.
The arrival of law enforcement and the rescuers was timely, but firefighters were able to dominate the flames only to about 21 hours.
Rushed to the crash site, the mayor of Olgiate Olona, cavalier Carlo Ferrari (which relate in detail about whether talking to the City Council of Olgiate Olona and by letter to the Prefecture of Varese), accompanied by the town clerk, accountant John Capozza, and the officer health, Dr. Lorenzo Fraenza.
To the furious winds in gusts of rain came to the place of tragedy accompanied by Olgiatese parish priest Fr Aldo Zecchin (who described the disaster on Liber Parish Chronicus), the archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini, who set off from Milan after learning the news: he gave the blessing to the remains of the victims trapped in the crumpled sheets of the fuselage.
The same evening they arrived in Olgiate Olona some relatives of the victims; the relatives of the dead learned almost all the news from the mass media whose operators – journalists and photojournalists – came in a short time before the remains of the disaster.
This cold history, but the thing that impressed us most is getting to know a watchful former fire rushed during the plane crash, A.M. which every year participates in Olgiate Olona the solemn commemoration of the victims, in the remotest years still speaks with shining eyes and you see that tear the heart, think even the pilots daughters have “adopted” as their dad,
personally we have a lot of respect and a lot of respect for this person, so people no longer exist in the world.
